Gautam Gambhir has stepped down as the captain of Delhi Daredevils today. Shreyas Iyer has been named as his replacement.
Gambhir, who led Kolkata franchise in the past led them to two successful titles and had been a solid opener for them. The franchise dint shows any interest in retaining him as he expressed his desire to play for his home side. Gambhir had a poor outing with the bat as he managed to score only 85 runs in six matches in this edition.
In the press conference, Gambhir thanked the Delhi management for the faith they had on him and said that his batting display had been poor and that prompted him to take this decision.
Delhi is now placed at the bottom of the points table as they won a single game against Mumbai Indians.
This is how Twitter reacted to his decision :
Gautam Gambhir should join the Army.

This has been the problem with DD. They had more captains than any other franchise had so far.
If results don't go according to them, they remove the captain, players, support staff everyone.
While successful teams like MI, CSK, KKR focus on building a base or core of the team.— Abhishek ✨ (@ImAbhishek7_) April 25, 2018

Gambhir was mad to want to finish career at Delhi. Had established team at Kolkata. Could have finished with an IPL trophy. #IPL2018

KKR valued Gambhir as a player and captain – DD management v bad – if such decisions r justified then why is Rohit sharma not resigning?
— drmeeta paul (@drmeetapaul4) April 25, 2018
I am not very surprised, honestly, One thing about Gambhir is that he takes up responsibility and this is the right decision. DD still have a top side and all they need is a few games to go their way to gain some momentum. https://t.co/pWpw9uFxPY

Gautam Gambhir resigned from captaincy, in 2013 his coach Ricky Ponting decided to step down from captaincy post after 5-6 matches and later MI won that IPL under King RO….

Gautam Gambhir has taken the fall for his team’s poor show…some of the #DD tactical decisions were questionable but it felt, from the outside, that they weren’t his decisions alone. #IPL

Dear #DD fans we would like to share @GautamGambhir has chosen to step down as a captain for @DelhiDaredevils a decision taken by him only. We as a franchise salute this courageous call of his, a first in India cricket! A true #dilliwala #Legendary

Gautam Gambhir's stepping down as captain reminds me of one of the last scenes of Sholay, where Jai, dying, looks at Radha & softly says to Veeru, 'Yeh Kahani Bhi Adhoori Reh Gayi'

Before criticizing Gautam Gambhir's captaincy skills, remember one thing GG made KKR two times champion..

Lead KKR from 2011 to 2017 : There was no panic, no press conference, nothing from team owners or management.
Went to DD & played 6 matches : Had to step down immediately. #GautamGambhir

In high performance sport the hardest call is to say may be I am not good enough for a particular job. Real hard. Shows immense character that @GautamGambhir is able to do so.
