Chennai Super Kings play against Mumbai Indians in their next match in IPL 2020 on Friday, as IPL El Classico fixture returns. CSK beat Mumbai in the season opener of IPL 2020, in the first leg. But since then, the campaign has been polar opposite for both teams.
While Mumbai Indians have won seven games since then, CSK have lost seven. MS Dhoni has been hugely criticised for his decision making and tactics as a skipper throughout the tournament. With only four games remaining, it is unlikely for CSK to win all four and make it to the playoffs.
In such a scenario, we at Cricfit, take a look at the possible captains in the CSK camp, if MS Dhoni is rested for the remaining games. Remember this is just a hypothetical situation and does not play a role in the final decision. This season has been a forgetful one with the bat for the CSK skipper. He has scored just 164 runs from 10 games averaging 27.33.
Here are the Three Players Who Can Lead CSK if MS Dhoni Sits Out:
1. Shane Watson
The former Australian all-rounder was key to CSK’s title-winning season in 2018. He scored an unbeaten ton in the final to help CSK win their third IPL title. In this season, Watson has scored 285 runs from 10 matches so far.
It has been a below-par season for him by his standards. Maybe the leadership responsibility will bring out the best in him and he can help CSK finish on a high.

2. Faf Du Plessis
The former South African skipper has been the best player for CSK in this season so far. He has scored 375 runs from 10 games and will be looking to cross the 400-run mark when CSK plays against Mumbai Indians on Friday. Du Plessis will also be an able replacement for MS Dhoni to lead the side.
His experience of leading South Africa in all three formats will come in handy as well. He has looked at ease with the bat at the top of the order, while the rest others have struggled for runs. If he eventually goes onto lead the team, this will be the first time Du Plessis will be leading CSK in his IPL career.

3. Ambati Rayudu
Ambati Rayudu like Watson was central to CSK’s success in 2018. He scored 602 runs that year, which was the best of his IPL career. This year, he has scored 250 runs from eight games. He missed a few matches unfortunately due to injury and has lost his touch since his return.
He is another option for CSK to captain the side in case MS Dhoni opts to sit out for the remaining games. Like Du Plessis, Rayudu will lead the team for the first time, if he is given the role of captaincy in the remaining games.
