The 2020 IPL season has been an eventful one and a memorable one at the same time for some players. We saw the resurgence of Royal Challengers Bangalore while we also witnessed the downfall of Chennai Super Kings who have by far been one of the most successful IPL franchises in history. Talking about the players, there have been some who went on to make it big while there were others as well who went on to flop on the big stage.

The likes of Varun Chakravarthy used IPL as a platform to perform and earn a selection in the Indian side whereas the dipping form of Rishabh Pant eventually cost the wicket-keeper a place in the limited-overs side. With all the highs and lows players have experienced this season, we take a look at the players that constitute the Flop XI of IPL 2020.

Let’s take a look at the Flop XI of the season:

1. Aaron Finch

Australia’s limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch has had an IPL to forget as he’s had one of the worst seasons for any franchise. He was bought for a whopping Rs. 4.40 crores as the Mike Hesson hoped that Finch would solve RCB’s opening woes but it turned out to be the exact opposite of their hopes as Finch just managed 236 runs in 11 matches which included just one fifty.

In majority matches, Finch ended up getting out in the first six overs thus putting RCB in trouble very early on in the innings. It was Devdutt Padikkal in Finch’s absence of form who took the responsibility to play the role of the anchor for the side. Out and all Finch was one of the disappointments of the season as he was eventually replaced by Josh Phillipe in the latter half of the season.

2. Prithvi Shaw

The young gun opening batter who made his test debut for India last year against West Indies didn’t live up to the high expectations this season. This season has by far been the worst season for Shaw as he managed just 228 runs across 13 innings which just includes two fifties.

There came a point in the tournament when Shaw was replaced by Rahane as the opener alongside Shikhar Dhawan. Ahead of the 2021 Auctions, the capitals might just not consider retaining the batsman since they have sufficient openers in the side in the form of Carey, Rahane and Dhawan.

3. Glenn Maxwell

It’s very difficult to digest the fact that Glenn Maxwell finished the 2020 IPL season playing 13 matches without hitting a single six. The Kings XI Punjab management had picked Maxwell to bat down the order and help them finish matches off in style but Maxwell turned out to be the biggest disappointment for the franchise as he failed to finish any match for the side.

The Anil Kumble management gave the all-rounder an extended run despite multiple failures but Maxwell just couldn’t get his bat going this season as he managed to score merely 108 runs in 13 matches at a shocking average of 15.42.

4. Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant has had a patchy IPL season as he has failed to score runs this time. A lot was expected of Pant since now he’s in India’s long term plans following MS Dhoni’s retirement from the shorter formats. But for some reason the pressure just got to Pant as his approach in every inning wasn’t like the fearless Pant we’ve been seeing over the years.

Moreover, his strike rate dropped from 162 to 109 this season which clearly shows the batsman has struggled left and right. It is also the first time since 2016 that Pant will finish the tournament without a single fifty as his highest score this season has been just 38.

5. Kedar Jadhav

Kedar Jadhav

The Chennai Super Kings have had a disappointing campaign this season as they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in IPL history but what was even more disappointing was the form of its players. Kedar Jadhav who played in the 2019 World Cup for India had a disastrous IPL.

With MS Dhoni hinting that they will do a lot of changing and chopping, it might be the last season for the all-rounder in the Yellow jersey.

6. MS Dhoni

The Chennai Super Kings skipper came into this season without playing a competitive game ever since the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.  Though he was well prepared with enough practice sessions at Chennai, it didn’t well reflect in his performance as he failed to finish off even a single game for his side.

He struggled to get off the mark and faced difficulties in facing the spinners as Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar kept getting the skipper off in front of the wicket. In the 14 matches Dhoni played this season, he could merely score 200 runs without a single fifty to his name. Moreover his strike rate this season was on all-time low in IPL history as he was striking at just 116 this season.

7. Riyan Parag

The young blood who hails from Orissa hasn’t had the greatest season this year just like his franchise Rajasthan Royals. Riyan Parag is often hailed as the future of Indian cricket as last season we witnessed a sublime show playing in the IPL at the age of 18 years.

But the 2020 season has been slightly contrasting to the one last year, this season he could only manage 86 runs in 12 matches and could only finish one game which came off against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Dubai. But other than that one inning we don’t recall any memorable knock from Riyan which is why he too was a disappointment this season.

8. Andre Russell

The destructive all-rounder from the Caribbean who is arguably one of the most dangerous T20 batsmen in the World didn’t really have the most ideal seasons for the KKR. He struggled through form and injuries resulting in a poor show this year.

He came into this season after not having a that great CPL but with the shorter boundaries in stadiums like Sharjah, it was expected that Andre Russell would go on to finish multiple matches. Even his bowling seemed fairly ordinary as he was tonked all over. Russell finished the season with just 117 runs at a shocking average of just 13 with 6 wickets to his name.

9. Dale Steyn

The Steyn Gun just didn’t fire this season as he failed to pick up wickets as well as failed to cause an impact. In the three matches Steyn played this season he was smashed all around the park. Lack of movement off the pitch and reduction in pace made Dale Steyn look very ordinary as he finished off with just one wicket in the season.

It might be the last season for the veteran South African fast bowler in the IPL following his consecutive poor seasons in India.

10. Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav

India’s premium spinner and one half of the ‘Kulcha’ duo had a disastrous IPL season for the second successive year. The mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was picked ahead of Kuldeep Yadav and with Varun performing exceptionally well in every match, it meant Kuldeep had to sit out of for majority matches this season.

If we happen to compare the past two seasons of Kuldeep Yadav, last season he played nine matches wherein he picked up four wickets whereas this season he merely played three matches picking up one wicket. With the kind of seasons, Kuldeep has had with KKR it looks highly unlikely that they would look to retain him next season.

11. Navdeep Saini

Navdeep Saini

The speedster known for his extreme pace and ability to generate movement off the seam didn’t look in the greatest nick this season. With Saini being picked over Umesh Yadav, it was expected that he would provide those early breakthroughs for RCB in the Powerplay but failed to do so as he managed to pick up just 6 wickets in 12 games this season.

Bangalore would have expected more from their senior pacer.
