The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has turned every stone possible to host the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). They worked closely with Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) to make the tournament happen with a bio-secure bubble in place. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings player KM Asif became the first player to break the bubble; although it was done unintentionally.

Incidentally, Chennai have been the most affected team due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Two of the players along with 11 other support staffs tested positive for the novel coronavirus. They had to undergo 14-days of quarantine and give two negative tests within 24 hours before joining the side.

This prompted Chennai Super Kings to delay their practice, which has taken a toll on their performance. Chennai are currently sitting last in the points table with one win from three matches. Amid all these, a report in The Indian Express has stated that player KM Asif has become the first player to have breached the bio-bubble.

The report also added that KM Asif misplaced his key and went to the reception which does not fall under the designated places. He is currently under six days of quarantine.

“It was an unintentional mistake but rules had to be followed. He underwent six days of quarantine and has now resumed practice with the team,” a source in the IPL told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, as per guidelines, a player will be sent to six days of quarantine for the first offence. However, a second offence will see him missing one match while the third one can rule him out of the entire tournament. On top of it, the franchises will not be able to call any replacements for that player.

“The first offence – 6-day re-quarantine (without pay for the number of matches missed). Second offence – One-match suspension (without pay) to take effect after the completion of the 6-day re-quarantine (without pay). Third offence – removal from the registered squad for the rest of the season -no replacement allowed,” the notification reads.
