As the coronavirus pandemic continues to expand its threat across the globe, the future of the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 looks very gloomy. The 13th edition of the cash-rich league has been postponed until April 15 in the wake of COVID-19 which was scheduled to start from March 29.

As per the current scenario, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has adopted a slow and steady approach. While things will only get clear as the day progresses, the Ministry of External Affair has delivered their judgement on the future of IPL 2020.

The Indian government urged that the league be cancelled to help slow the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was in response to organisers’ plans of going ahead with the tournament behind closed doors. He also urged the sports federation to think wisely before holding events.

“Think it is for the organisers to decide whether to go ahead with it or not,” Dammu Ravi, additional secretary, MEA and coordinator for COVID-19, said.

“Our advice would be to not do it at this time but if they want to go ahead, it is their decision,” he added.

Meanwhile, the BCCI and the other stakeholders are desperate to hold the event due to all the money involved in it. IPL is arguably the richest sporting event in the world. Unsurprisingly, the BCCI is ready to comply with every advisory to start the tournament on time. However, the state governments have refused to cooperate with BCCI stating that human life is more important than IPL.
