Eoin Morgan, the name became a daily affair in cricket after the man became the first English captain to lift the World Cup in 2019 in England. A phenomenal captain with the attributes of a fine batsman has blended well in England’s cricket episodes. Morgan, 34, transited from Ireland to England, has a supreme cricket career.

Morgan has been the man behind England’s transformation as a team in limited-overs cricket. Ever since England humiliating drubbing in the 2015 World Cup, Eoin Morgan, and head coach Trevor Bayliss stuck to the same squad and developed an attacking brand of cricket that delivered the goods for England after four years.

So far, Morgan has represented the Three Lions in 16 Test matches, 243 ODIs, and 102 T20Is scoring 700, 7620, and 2311 runs respectively including 16 centuries combined.

1. Born in Ireland

Eoin Morgan was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 10th September 1986. Born to an English mother, he has held a British passport since his birth. Morgan began playing cricket at an early age. Representing England became his wish since he was 13. His desire to play Test cricket was the reason behind it which turned into reality when he made his Test debut against Bangladesh at the historic Lord’s Cricket Stadium in 2010.

2. Eoin Morgan’s Two-Nation Relationship

Morgan led Ireland in the 2006 U-19 World Cup. He became the second-highest scorer in that edition. He made his One Day International debut for Ireland on 5th August 2006 against Scotland at the European Championships. Morgan represented his native country in the 2007 World Cup. Ireland flourished under his captaincy in that tournament. He played 23 ODIs for Ireland and piled up 744 runs.

He made his debut for England in 2009 in a T20 match against the Netherlands. His dream of wearing white became a reality on 27th May 2010 at Lords against Bangladesh when he received his Test cap. He got named in the English squad as a replacement for Paul Collingwood.

Two months before the 2015 ICC World Cup, Morgan became England’s captain for the limiter-over formats. He led England to win the 2019 ICC World Cup, the biggest spectacle in ODI cricket. He became the fourth player in history to represent two different countries at ICC World Cup after he had made his World Cup debut for England in 2011.

3. Debutant Dismissed for 99

His debut marked in 2006 saw him as the first player in ODI history who walked back to the pavilion for 99 on ODI debut. Till now, he is the only player holding the record. Eoin Morgan, who made his ODI debut for Ireland got run out before reaching the three-fiure during a game against Scotland at the Cambusdoon New Ground, Ayr.


4. Wisden Cricketer of The Year, 2011.

Eoin Morgan was the recipient of the title “Wisden Cricketer of The Year” in 2011. He was one of the four cricketers who received the title in 2011. He scored 958 runs in that years across all the formats from 27 matches including one century

5. Brilliant IPL Contracts

Eoin Morgan was hitting the headlines after securing an IPL contract in 2010. Royal Challengers Bangalore bought him for US$ 220,000. After this, he represented Kolkata Knight Riders from 2011 to 2013. In 2015, Sunrisers Hyderabad roped him in.

He was a part of the Sunrisers’ winning squad in 2016 and played seven games in that edition. In 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders picked him up. He was handed over the captaincy after KKR’s captain Dinesh Karthik stepped down midway. He retained his captaincy and contract for the 2021 edition. He has played for three different franchises in the IPL.
