IPL 2022: BCCI Announce Two New Teams, CVC Capital & Sanjeev Goenka Group Win Bids

IPL 2022 new teams

RPSG Group of Sanjiv Goenka and CVC Capital, an international investment firm, have bagged the two new IPL teams as per reports circling across the media. The owners have left behind other popular names like the Glazer family who owns a stake with Manchester United. The likes of Jindal Steel, Torrent Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma were also in the bidding race for bagging the two new teams.

Ahmedabad and Lucknow join the other eight established cities in the league to make it a 10-team tournament from the next year. The Sanjeev Goenka Group have picked Lucknow as their home base for INR 7090 crores, while owners of CVC Capitals have bagged Ahmedabad for  INR 5166 crores.

10 parties turned up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team auction at Taj Dubai exactly at 12:30 PM IST (11:00 AM UAE). Manchester United’s owners were one of those who placed bids to own an IPL franchise at one of the six cities – Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Cuttack, Dharamsala, Guwahati and Indore.

The Adani Group and the RPSG Group, owned by Sanjiv Goenka, are among others who have submitted bids. It has also been learnt that Rhiti Sports, promoted by MS Dhoni manager Arun Pandey, submitted a bid for Cuttack.

As per sources, Rhiti was fronting for a big company, believed to be owned by local businessman Anand Podar. However, it is understood that he arrived a little late at the venue and his bid was eventually not accepted for a late submission.

A total of 74 matches will be played in IPL 2022

The 2022 edition will not be the first time the IPL will comprise 10 teams – that already happened a decade ago. It has been confirmed that the tournament format will follow the 2011 model, which scrapped the simple home-and-away format, and included a total of 74 matches (instead of the current number of 60).

In the 2011 edition, the 10 teams were split into two loose groups, and the tournament comprised 70 league matches and four playoff games, with all the teams ranked in one composite league table. During the league phase, every team played the same number of league matches, which was 14.

Each team played the other four in their group both home and away (eight matches), four of the teams in the other group once each (four matches, either home or away), and the remaining team in the other group twice, both home and away. A random draw decided the composition of the groups as well as who played whom across the groups once and twice.
