In a thrilling five-run victory over Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2023 match in Guwahati, Punjab Kings captain Shikhar Dhawan scored an 86-run masterpiece, earning the praise of South African great AB de Villiers.

The legendary AB de Villiers of South Africa praised Shikhar Dhawan for his inspiring batting display against the Rajasthan Royals and predicted that the captain of the Punjab Kings will have a productive season with the bat in the current IPL season.

Prior to Nathan Ellis’ outstanding bowling performances, Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh both scored brilliant fifties and on Wednesday, PBKS defeated Rajasthan Royals by a razor-thin margin of five runs.

“He is a fantastic athlete. The team’s benefit is to put that inning together. Let’s not forget about his front-row partner.”

After the game, AB de Villiers said in a JioCinema interview that he relieved some of Shikhar’s pressure so that he could play his own game, manipulate the ball, and really take it until he found a sniff.

Despite being second fiddle to Prabhsimran at one point and being 30 off 30 balls, Dhawan changed gears with ease. Following the dismissal of his opening partner, Dhawan stepped up the ante and scored 56 runs off the following 26 balls.

Dhawan broke the hold with a six-over long-on off Yuzvendra Chahal, who had been bowling him until the final ball of the 12th over. As soon as Chahal came back, Dhawan hit him for three fours in the 14th over: a sweep, a whip, and an inside-out.

“It was a rough night for the spinners. I have never seen him play this way before, but look at him moving around. It’s energizing, and I believe he still has a lot of runs left in him this year, said De Villiers.”
