Jason Roy has been named as a replacement for Shakib AL Hasan by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2023. He was set a base price of Rs 1.5 Crore but went unsold in the mini auction during December 2022.
It gives some relief to Kolkata Knight Riders franchise as they have been dealt major blows as Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of IPL 2023 and WTC finals to be played in June this year as back surgery is due in London. Shakib AL Hasan has also opted out.
Kolkata Knight Riders lost the opening encounter against Punjab Kings by 7 runs via the DLS method. They will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in their first home game at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 6th April 2023.
The England explosive opener has featured for four teams in the Indian Premier League. He played for Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Lions, and Sunrisers Hyderabad before being signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023. He last played in Indian Premier League during the 2021 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad. During that season, Roy scored 150 runs from 5 matches including a one-half century.
Kolkata Knight Riders struggled in the opening game against Punjab Kings where Mandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell cheaply.
Jason Roy’s impressive record in T20s of late
Jason Roy has been in cracking form of late. He produced a brilliant knock during PSL 8 for Quetta Gladiators with a superb 145 off 63 deliveries against Peshawar Zalmi. Roy remained unbeaten and helped Quetta chase down a massive target of 243 in just 18.2 overs. For his brilliant knock, Jason Roy was named the Player of the Match award.
Roy has the ability to put pressure on the opponent bowlers right from the word go and not allow them to settle. He has been a consistent performer for England also in T20Is also.
He has played so far 64 T20I matches and scored 1522 runs with 8 half-centuries to his name and a strike rate of 137.61. It will be interesting to see if Jason Roy can provide the stability at the top of the order against Royal Challengers Bangalore was given a chance in XI.
