Former cricketer Wasim Akram has backed Ajinkya Rahane to take over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy, once Mahendra Singh Dhoni retires from the Indian Premier League. He feels that the veteran batter will be an ideal captaincy candidate. Ajinkya Rahane has made a fantastic comeback to form in the ongoing season of the tournament.

So far, the right-handed batter has scored 224 runs in seven games, at an average of 44.80, and a strike rate of 189.83. Wasim Akram feels the Chennai Super Kings won’t get a better captaincy option than Ajinkya Rahane after Mahendra Singh Dhoni retires. Speaking to Sportkeeda, the former cricketer said,

“CSK had tried Ravindra Jadeja as captain in IPL 2022 and saw that his own performances were getting affected. They had to change the captain. I think they won’t get a better option than Rahane as he can become consistent and is a local player. We have seen that local players are more successful in franchise cricket.”

“As for foreign players, they don’t even remember players’ names, so how can they lead? So, I think Rahane is an excellent choice to lead Chennai if Dhoni says he’s had enough,” he added.

I want MS Dhoni to sign off from IPL winning the tournament: Wasim Akram

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been a part of the Indian Premier League since the first edition of the tournament. He retired from International cricket several years ago but has continued playing for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. However, there are speculations about 2023 being the wicketkeeper’s last season.

Former cricketer Wasim Jaffer feels Mahendra Singh Dhoni end his Indian Premier League career on a high, winning his fifth title. He said,

“It’ll be a dream come true for someone, who has achieved a lot for India as captain. I want that even God helps a player like Dhoni. I want CSK to win and Dhoni to sign off from the IPL that way.”

The Chennai Super Kings slipped to fourth on the points table after two consecutive losses in the 2023 Indian Premier League. They have ten points from nine matches, with an NRR of 0.329. They will take on the Lucknow Super Giants next on Wednesday, May 3 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
