In Hyderabad on Thursday, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets as Virat Kohli completed his sixth IPL century off 62 balls.

With 14 points from 13 games, this win kept RCB in the running for a playoff spot. They and the Mumbai Indians are tied on points, but they lead in net run rate, and if they win their remaining game, they might advance.

With his first T20I century against Afghanistan last year in the Asia Cup, it was Kohli’s seventh T20 ton overall.

Virat Kohli set a new record today. By scoring his sixth century in an eight-wicket demolition of Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, the former captain of India and Royal Challengers Bangalore matched Chris Gayle’s record for the most IPL hundreds.

The RCB opener would complete his century in impressive fashion with a loft over deep mid-wicket for a six, drawing a thunderous cheer from the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium crowd. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar would dismiss him off the very next delivery with a short one. Kohli successfully hit 12 fours and four maximums in a 63-delivery inning.

After four years, Kohli scored his first IPL century. His first came in 2016, the same year the then-RCB captain amassed over 900 runs, including four tons. Kohli scored one against Afghanistan during the Asia Cup last year, making this his seventh T20 century overall.

Kohli was aggressive immediately after entering the game to open alongside Faf du Plessis (71). The pair combined for a 172-run partnership off 107 deliveries for the first wicket.

Heinrich Klaasen achieved his first triple-figure IPL score earlier, scoring 104 off 51 deliveries to help Hyderabad reach 186/5 in their allotted 20 overs.
