Records Broken During Gujarat Titans' Brilliant Win Over Mumbai Indians

Gujarat Titans started their IPL 2024 tournament with a thrilling 6-run win over Mumbai Indians played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 24th March.

After being asked to bat first, Gujarat Titans posted 168 for 6 in 20 overs. Sai Sudharsan was the top scorer 45 while Gill and Tewaita scored valuable runs. In reply, Mumbai Indians looked comfortable with Rohit Sharma and Brevis looked at ease. After the dismissal of Rohit, things went in different directions as none of the Mumbai Indian batters looked comfortable.

Hardik Pandya came at number 7 and could not take MI to the finishing lines. Shubman Gill’s IPL debut was spot on as Gujarat Titans won the match by 6 runs to register 2 points.

Here we look at the 3 records broken during Gujarat Titans’ brilliant win over Mumbai Indians

  1. Bumrah has more three-wicket hauls in IPL history

Jasprit Bumrah returned to IPL after missing last year’s edition due to an injury. He looked sharp with his bowling stint putting enough pressure on Gujarat Titans batters. Bumrah produced a superb yorker to dismiss Wriddhiman Saha.

He then dismissed David Miller and Sai Sudharsan in the same over to restrict Gujarat Titans to a modest total. Bumrah returned with figures of 3 for 14 in 4 overs which helped MI restrict GT to 168 for 6.

With his 3-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans on Sunday, Bumrah now has the most three-wicket hauls in IPL history leaving past Lasith Malinga and Yuzvendra Chahal. Both Malinga and Chahal have 19 wicket hauls, and Bumrah has moved to 20.

Bumrah achieved the feat of becoming the first Indian to pick 150 wickets for Mumbai Indians. He has played 124 games for MI with 151 scalps at an economy of 7.37 runs per over.

Mohit Sharma
  1. Mohit Sharma joint joint-highest wicket vs MI

The veteran pace bowler Mohit Sharma had a superb spell against Mumbai Indians. He bowled with great variations not allowing them to score runs with ease. Mohit took the important wicket of Brevis with a sharp return catch. He then dismissed the dangerous Tim David to change the fortune in favour of the Gujarat Titans.

Mohit ended with figures of 2 for 32 in 4 overs. He became the joint-highest wicket-taker versus Mumbai Indians in IPL history. Sharma has played for Chennai Super Kings from 2013-2015. From 2016-2018, Mohit featured for Punjab Kings. He was bought by Delhi Capitals in the 2020 season. During the 2023 auction, Mohit was bought by Gujarat Titans.

He has played a total of 20 matches against Mumbai Indians with 33 wickets to his name with a strike rate of just 13. Dwyane Bravo has 33 wickets against Mumbai Indians in IPL history.

  1. First Overseas Player To Make His IPL Debut On His Birthday

Afghanistan’s Azamatullah Omarzai made his IPL debut against Mumbai Indians. He started the innings on a wicket dismissing Ishan Kishan. Omarzai then got rid of Naman Dhir via review for LBW.

He looked impressive with the bat at number 4 replacing Hardik Pandya. Omarzai did not bowl his full quota of overs. He became the first overseas and second overall to make his IPL debut on his birthday.

Vikrant Yeligati of Mumbai Indians made his IPL debut on his birthday against Chennai Super Kings in 2008.
