On Thursday, the iconic MS Dhoni made headlines by relinquishing the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings to Ruturaj Gaikwad on the eve of the IPL opener. This unexpected move has sparked speculation about Dhoni’s future with the franchise.
The announcement, made by the Indian Premier League on their official platform, came just before CSK’s clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore. The decision reflects a desire for a seamless transition, amid rumors that Dhoni might retire after the season.
Gaikwad, a talented opener, debuted for CSK in 2020 and has since played 52 games, impressing with his elegant batting style. He enjoyed a stellar season in 2021, accumulating 635 runs in 16 games, following up on his strong performance the previous year. Additionally, Gaikwad has experience in leadership, having led the Indian team to victory in the Asian Games and captained his state side, Maharashtra.
CSK’s CEO Kasi said: “MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season.”
“Whatever Dhoni does, it is in the best interest of the team. I got to know of the decision just before the captains’ meeting. You have to respect his decision, it is his call.”

Despite handing over the captaincy, Dhoni remains an integral part of CSK’s setup, expected to contribute in a different capacity. The franchise had previously attempted a leadership transition in 2022, but it was short-lived, with Dhoni reassuming the role midway through the season.
According to head coach Stephen Fleming, the team is now better prepared for the change, aiming to develop young players for leadership roles while leveraging Dhoni’s expertise.
Fleming added: “We weren’t ready to move away from MS in 2022. Dhoni has a good sense of the game, but we want to develop the young players for the role. We are well prepared this time.”
Dhoni’s influence extends beyond his on-field performance, with his leadership guiding CSK to numerous successes, including two Champions League titles. Despite battling knee issues and undergoing surgery, Dhoni’s commitment to the game remains unwavering. With his return to full fitness, expectations are high for his performance this season, potentially batting higher up the order.
With Dhoni’s continued presence throughout the season, Gaikwad will have the opportunity to learn from the seasoned veteran and rely on his guidance during pressure situations. Dhoni’s legacy in the IPL, marked by his unparalleled leadership and success, cements his status as one of the game’s greatest icons.
