In the second encounter of the IPL 2024 season, the Gujarat Titans (GT) faced off against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk. Despite the appointment of Shubman Gill as captain, GT failed to halt CSK’s momentum, resulting in CSK securing their second consecutive win of the season.
Gill, at the age of 24, assumed the leadership mantle from Hardik Pandya, who had led GT to their inaugural IPL title in 2022 before joining the Mumbai Indians for the current season. However, GT found themselves on the wrong side of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, as Gill was fined for the team’s slow over rate during the match held on March 26, with the fine amounting to INR 12 lakhs.
This marked GT’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct regarding minimum over-rate offenses. On the cricketing front, CSK got off to a flying start after being asked to bat first, posting a formidable total of 206/6.
Shubman Gill can play a key role for his side
The innings was propelled by brilliant performances from Rachin Ravindra (46 off 20), skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (46 off 36), and Shivam Dube (51 off 23). Despite Rashid Khan picking up two wickets for GT, the team’s batting order collapsed, with only Sai Sudharsan (37 off 31) showing any resistance as GT ended their innings at 143/8, resulting in a comprehensive 63-run victory for CSK.
Despite winning their opening match of the season against MI, GT currently finds themselves in the sixth position on the IPL points table. Their upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 31 provides an opportunity for redemption and a chance to climb up the rankings.
Meanwhile, CSK, sitting comfortably at the top of the table, is set to face Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on the same day, aiming to extend their winning streak and further solidify their position.
