IPL 2024: Here’s How Royal Challengers Bangalore Can Still Qualify For Playoffs

In the quest for a spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) received a significant boost when the Delhi Capitals (DC) beat the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday. This victory effectively dashed LSG’s hopes of surpassing RCB in the points table, even if they were to triumph in their final league match.

Additionally, DC’s inferior Net Run Rate (NRR) renders their chances of securing a top 4 spot virtually futile. Consequently, RCB’s primary obstacle to playoff qualification remains the Chennai Super Kings. Currently positioned 6th in the standings with 12 points from 13 matches and an NRR of +0.387, RCB finds themselves in a pivotal position.

The 5th-placed Delhi Capitals, with 14 points from 14 matches and an NRR of -0.377, present a close challenge. Sunrisers Hyderabad occupy the 4th spot, with 14 points and two games left in the league campaign, boasting an NRR of +0.406. Meanwhile, the Chennai Super Kings hold the 3rd spot with 14 points from 13 matches and an impressive NRR of +0.528.

RCB

The upcoming match against Chennai Super Kings is a do-or-die scenario for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Failure to secure a win would effectively eliminate their chances of clinching a top 4 spot. However, if they emerge victorious, they will either displace the Chennai Super Kings or the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

In Scenario 1, if RCB triumphs over CSK but their NRR remains inferior, their fate hinges on the performance of Sunrisers Hyderabad in their remaining league matches. Should SRH lose both matches, RCB would be in contention for a top 4 spot, provided their NRR surpasses that of SRH’s. In this case, both RCB and CSK would advance to the playoffs.

In Scenario 2, if SRH secures victory in either of their next two matches, they will secure a playoff berth. This outcome would leave RCB to vie with CSK for a top 4 spot. To ensure qualification, RCB would need to defeat CSK by a certain margin, depending on whether they bat first or chase a target. If successful, both RCB and SRH would advance to the playoffs.
