IPL 2024: Matt Henry Named As Replacement For David Willey

Lucknow Super Giants named New Zealand pace bowler Matt Henry as a replacement for David Willey for the Indian Premier League 2024. David Willey was bought by Lucknow Super Giants in the auction for Rs 2 Crore.

 

Willey decided to withdraw from the tournament due to personal reasons. Lucknow Super Giants suffered 20 run loss in their first game of the season against Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on 24th March. They will play their 2nd match this season against Punjab Kings at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow on 30th March.

Matt Henry has been picked by Lucknow Super Giants for a base price of 1.25 Crore. This will be his third franchise in IPL after being picked by Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings.

Henry has played just two IPL matches so far playing for Punjab Kings. During his stint in IPL, Henry took a total of 1 wicket for Punjab Kings in the 2017 edition. Lucknow Super Giants struggled in the bowling department against Rajasthan Royals conceding 193 for 4 in 20 overs.

Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers during the Test series played at home against Australia recently. He grabbed a total of 17 wickets in 4 innings and was named the player of the series award. New Zealand lost the 2-match Test series against Australia by 0-2.

David Willey

Henry can swing the ball, especially with the red ball which makes batting very tough. He has played 25 Test matches, 82 ODI matches, and 17 T20I matches for New Zealand. His performance looked impressive with 95 wickets in test matches, 141 wickets in the One-day international format, and 20 wickets in T20I format.

He made his T20 debut for Canterbury in the New Zealand T20 tournament. Henry has taken 151 wickets from 131 matches (126 innings) so far at an economy of 8.39 runs per over with figures of 4 for 24.

David Willey’s stint in IPL

David Willey played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023. He took a total of 3 wickets from 4 matches at an economy of 7 runs per over with figures of 2 for 16.

Willey played a total of 11 IPL games picking up 6 wickets at an economy of 7.56 runs per over. He made his IPL debut for CSK in the 2018 edition.
