When Kwena Maphaka, the 17-year-old South African speedster, joined the Mumbai Indians as a replacement for the injured Dilshan Madushanka for the upcoming IPL season, he encountered an unexpected question from his mother upon arriving at the team hotel in Mumbai.

Maphaka’s induction into the squad came after Madushanka sustained a hamstring injury during a match, prompting Mumbai Indians to secure Maphaka’s services. Despite the pressure, Maphaka’s performance during the U19 World Cup, where he took 21 wickets at an impressive average of 9.71, caught the attention of many.

With Maphaka’s arrival, Mumbai Indians expressed their delight at having him join their ranks, emphasizing the honour and blessing it is to welcome him into their “big family.” Maphaka’s cricketing prowess is evident from his T20 record, boasting 13 wickets in nine matches with an economy rate of 6.71, which includes a notable four-wicket haul.

His ability to generate pace and deliver a formidable bouncer has earned him recognition, having debuted for the South Africa U19 team at just 15 years old and already participated in two U19 World Cups. The Mumbai Indians highlighted Maphaka’s strengths, including his capability of bowling at speeds of up to 140kph.

Along with his proficiency in death bowling and yorkers, which stood out during the U19 World Cup. Moreover, Maphaka will have the opportunity to learn from seasoned bowlers like Lasith Malinga and Jasprit Bumrah, providing him with a conducive environment for growth and development.

As Mumbai Indians gear up for their IPL 2024 campaign under the leadership of new captain Hardik Pandya, Maphaka’s addition to the team adds depth to their bowling arsenal. The team’s opening match against last season’s runners-up, the Gujarat Titans, presents an early test for the young cricketer. However, with his talent and determination, Maphaka is poised to make a significant impact and carve out a successful career in the world of cricket.
