Ahead of their match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians named Harvik Desai for the remainder of IPL 2024. He has replaced hard-hitting Vishnu Vinod who has been ruled out due to forearm injury. He plays for Saurashtra in the domestic circuit and will be his first stint in IPL history. The stylish right-handed batter played a total of 27 T20s, 40 List A games and 46 First class games.
“Mumbai Indians announce that Harvik Desai will join the squad as a replacement for Vishnu Vinod,” an IPL media release stated.
Vishnu Vinod had a poor outing in the 2023 edition of IPL. He scored just 37 runs in 3 matches. He made a quickfire 30 off 20 balls against Gujarat Titans before failures against Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans led to being named in the playing XI last season.
Vishnu was superb with his batting during the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He made 363 runs from 8 matches (8 innings) with 1 century and 1 half-century including the best score of 109 not out.
Mumbai Indians will face RCB in a mouth-watering clash to be played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 11th April 2024. The five-time IPL champion MI would be hoping to gain momentum as they registered their first victory of the tournament beating Delhi Capitals by 29 runs in a high-scoring match.
Under the new captaincy of Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians lost the first three matches against Gujarat Titans, SRH and RR before top quality performance by Rohit and Co helped them to post 234 for 5 against DC.
Harvik Desai’s performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023-24
Harvik Desai had a great season for Saurashtra in the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season. He finished as the leading run-getter in the SMAT season with 336 runs from 7 matches (7 innings) including 1 century and 2 half-centuries including the best score of 104 not out.
Saurashtra did not qualify for the knockout stage in SMAT 2023-24. Desai might not get a chance as Ishan Kishan would be the wicketkeeper in the playing XI. Mumbai Indians would look to gain momentum as they will take on RCB in high-octane clash to be played at iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in just 2 hours.
