Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly Upset Over IPL Rule Confusion

Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly expressed frustration during the IPL 2024 match between Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals due to a misunderstanding regarding the tournament regulations concerning the use of foreign players as substitute fielders. The incident occurred when Rajasthan Royals opted to field Rovman Powell as a substitute fielder, prompting discussions between DC officials and the fourth umpire.

The confusion stemmed from RR’s decision to include Nandre Burger as a replacement for Shimron Hetmyer, leading to the perception that RR had fielded five overseas players simultaneously. The IPL regulations state that each team is limited to naming four overseas players in their starting eleven and cannot have more than four overseas players on the field at any given time during a match.

If a team starts with a maximum of four overseas players, a substitute fielder can only replace another overseas player. However, if the team starts with fewer than four overseas players, substitutes can be used as long as the total number of overseas players on the field does not exceed four. Despite the controversy, Riyan Parag’s exceptional performance turned the game in Rajasthan Royals‘ favour as they defeated Delhi Capitals by 12 runs.

Parag’s unbeaten 84 runs off 45 balls, which included seven fours and six sixes, propelled RR to a competitive total of 185/5 after a shaky start. In response, despite David Warner’s 49 off 34 balls, DC faltered under pressure, with their batsmen unable to mount a significant challenge. Tristan Stubbs contributed with an unbeaten 44, but it was insufficient to secure a victory for DC.

RR’s bowlers, led by Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal, displayed a clinical performance, picking up crucial wickets to restrict DC’s chase. Earlier in the innings, Parag forged key partnerships with Ravichandran Ashwin, Dhruv Jurel, and Shimron Hetmyer, enabling RR to set a formidable target for DC.
