During the IPL 2024 match against Punjab Kings on Wednesday, Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Daryl Mitchell found himself ‘completing’ two runs despite MS Dhoni declining a single.
On the third ball of the final over, Dhoni struck a delivery from Arshdeep Singh to deep cover, prompting Mitchell to start running.
However, Dhoni declined the run, leading to a humorous sequence where Mitchell reached the opposite end before returning to the non-striker’s end, avoiding being run out until the fielder retrieved the ball and threw it back.

While Dhoni compensated with a massive six over deep extra cover on the fifth ball of the over, his initial action drew criticism from fans on social media, with some labelling it as ‘selfish’.
Dhoni was eventually dismissed in the match, marking his first wicket loss this season, as CSK posted a total of 162/7. Punjab Kings comfortably chased down the target, reaching 163 with over 2 overs remaining.
Following the loss, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad believed his team fell “50-60 runs short” during the match and noted that while the pitch wasn’t initially favourable, it improved in the latter half.
Fans criticised Dhoni and called him selfish, you can watch the reactions here:

“Don’t do that in a team game” – Irfan Pathan remarks on MS Dhoni
Irfan Pathan has raised concerns about MS Dhoni’s decision not to let Daryl Mitchell have the strike during the IPL 2024 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Dhoni scored 14 runs from 11 balls as CSK set PBKS a target of 163 runs in Chennai on Wednesday, May 1. PBKS chased down the target with seven wickets and 13 deliveries to spare, moving up to seventh position on the points table.
During a discussion on Star Sports, Pathan was questioned about Dhoni’s innings, including his first six at Chepauk this season. While acknowledging Dhoni’s efforts, the cricketer-turned-commentator criticized his choice to decline a single while batting with Mitchell.
“You will definitely talk about the six since MS Dhoni has a huge fan following. People love him a lot. However, the sort of knock he played, more was expected from him,” he said.
“He shouldn’t have done that (refusing a single). This is a team game. Don’t do that in a team game. The other guy is also an international player.”
“If he had been a bowler, I would have understood it for sure. You have done that with (Ravindra) Jadeja and with Mitchell as well. You don’t need to do that. He could have avoided it,” Pathan added.
