Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting described their 16-run victory against Kolkata Knight Riders as one of the best wins he has ever experienced in the IPL. PBKS defended a total of just 111 runs, which is now the lowest total ever defended in the tournament’s history.
Ponting, who has been involved in the IPL as a coach since 2014, was thrilled but admitted it was a stressful experience. He joked about how, at his age of over 50, he didn’t need many such high-pressure games. He said that his heart rate was probably over 200 and laughed about how unpredictable the game of cricket can be.
Just a few days earlier, PBKS had failed to defend a massive score of 245. Now, they had managed to win with a total less than half of that. Ricky Ponting mentioned how they reminded the team at the halfway stage that smaller targets can sometimes be tricky to chase, especially on a pitch like this one, which was not easy to bat on.
A Challenging Pitch and a Tight Defence
Ponting emphasised that the pitch was tough throughout the game. The ball was not coming onto the bat properly, which made it difficult for the batters. He shared that their strategy was based on this observation. The players were told to keep up the pressure and make it hard for KKR to chase the small target.
Despite the low score, the PBKS bowlers delivered under pressure and managed to control the game. Ponting appreciated the effort of the entire team, who stayed focused and determined even when the odds seemed against them. He praised the bowlers for holding their nerve and making smart decisions during critical moments.
Chahal’s Brave and Match-Winning Spell
The star of the match was Yuzvendra Chahal, who played a major role in the win. He took four key wickets, including that of Rinku Singh, captain Ajinkya Rahane, Ramandeep Singh, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who was KKR’s top scorer. Ponting revealed that Chahal had been carrying a shoulder injury and had to take a fitness test before the match.
Despite this, he insisted he was fully fit and ready to play. Ponting spoke about how he checked in with Chahal before the match, and the bowler confidently assured him he was fine. The coach praised his brilliant performance, calling it a fantastic spell that helped secure the unexpected win.
