Even though Ruturaj Gaikwad is now the captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni’s presence behind the stumps remains crucial. His remarkable judgment in using the Decision Review System (DRS), often called the “Dhoni Review System,” was once again on display during CSK’s opening match against Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025.
Dhoni’s accuracy in calling for reviews has been unmatched over the years, and his skill was evident when Nathan Ellis trapped Mitchell Santner on the pads in the 18th over. The on-field umpire was unmoved, but Dhoni’s subtle nod signalled confidence in taking the review.
Without hesitation, Gaikwad followed Dhoni’s advice, and the replay confirmed that the ball was hitting the top ofthe middle stump. As the decision flashed ‘OUT,’ Ellis turned to Dhoni in celebration, acknowledging his flawless judgment.

CSK’s Dominance Restricts MI to 155/9
Mumbai Indians struggled to find their rhythm while batting, managing only 155/9 in their innings. Their innings started poorly as Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck, putting them under immediate pressure. The top order crumbled, unable to handle CSK’s disciplined bowling.
Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav (29) and Tilak Varma (31) provided some resistance by building a steady partnership, but it was not enough to change the momentum. Just when MI looked like they could rebuild, CSK’s bowlers tightened their grip once again. Deepak Chahar’s late cameo (28*) ensured MI crossed the 150-run mark, but their total seemed insufficient against a strong CSK batting line-up.
Dhoni’s Influence Remains Unmatched
Though Dhoni no longer wears the captain’s armband, his influence on the game is as strong as ever. His ability to assess situations quickly and make the right decisions continues to benefit CSK. Dhoni’s calm demeanour and sharp instincts behind the stumps give his teammates the confidence to trust his calls, especially when it comes to DRS.
This match was another reminder that Dhoni’s presence in the CSK line-up goes beyond leadership – his experience and cricketing intelligence are irreplaceable. Even as the team transitions under Gaikwad’s leadership, Dhoni’s role in shaping crucial moments remains vital, ensuring that CSK remains a formidable force in the IPL.
