IPL 2025: How KKR-RCB Rivalry Had Evolved So Far?

The IPL’s journey began on April 18, 2008, with an exciting clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. This game marked the start of India’s most-watched franchise-based cricket tournament. Fast forward to 2025, and these two teams are once again ready to square off in the opening match of IPL 2025, this time at Eden Gardens.

The Unforgettable IPL 2008 Opener, McCullum’s Dominance

The inaugural IPL match became etched in history thanks to Brendon McCullum’s explosive innings. RCB won the toss and opted to bowl first, giving KKR the opportunity to set the pace. KKR’s opening pair put up a solid 61-run partnership before Zaheer Khan made the first breakthrough, dismissing Sourav Ganguly.

Ricky Ponting and David Hussey followed soon after, but McCullum remained unshaken, launching an all-out assault on RCB’s bowlers. He blasted 13 sixes and 10 boundaries in an incredible 73-ball innings, scoring an unbeaten 158 runs. This remarkable performance took KKR to a total of 222/3 in their 20 overs.

RCB’s response was lackluster, with their batting lineup crumbling under pressure. They were unable to build any significant partnerships, and their top scorer was extras, with 19. Praveen Kumar (18) was the only player to reach double digits, and RCB were bowled out for a mere 82 runs. KKR secured a dominant 140-run victory in this historic IPL opener.

The Long-Standing Rivalry, KKR Vs RCB

Over the years, the rivalry between KKR and RCB has evolved into one of the most exciting and intense matchups in the IPL, often delivering thrilling finishes. While teams like CSK and MI dominate the spotlight, this rivalry is a fan favorite for its nail-biting conclusions.

On multiple occasions, matches between these two sides have been decided in the final over, with close victories, including a thrilling 1-run win for KKR in the 2024 season. Notably, RCB holds a painful memory from IPL 2017, when they were bowled out for a record-low total of 49 runs by KKR, which remains the lowest team total in IPL history.

While RCB had an edge in the earlier years, KKR has since gained dominance, winning six of the last eight encounters, including the last four in a row. In their 34 head-to-head IPL meetings, KKR has emerged victorious 20 times, while RCB has won 14. As these two teams prepare to face off again in IPL 2025, fans can anticipate another exhilarating chapter in this storied rivalry.
