The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to undergo significant changes ahead of the 2025 mega auction, particularly in its player retention process. Previously, when a player’s retention price exceeded a predetermined slot value, only the lower amount was deducted from the franchise’s total purse.
However, under the new rules, the higher amount between the retention price and slot value will be deducted. This change could greatly impact how franchises manage their finances. For example, when Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Virat Kohli for INR 17 crore, only INR 15 crore was deducted from their purse, but under the new rules, the full INR 17 crore would be counted.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are considering retaining players like Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, and Abhishek Sharma, would see a massive INR 55 crore deducted from their INR 120 crore purse, instead of INR 43 crore under the previous system.
Players Considering the Auction Route
The changes to the retention system are likely to push several high-profile players into the auction pool. Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has already hinted at entering the auction, asking in a recent social media post about his potential auction value.
Other notable players like Shreyas Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav might also consider the auction route. Competitive bidding in the auction could drive up their value beyond what they might receive through retention offers. Teams with larger purses, such as Punjab Kings, who could have INR 112 crore to spend, may make aggressive bids for these marquee players, increasing their potential earnings significantly.
Right to Match Card and Fresh Negotiations
Another key factor in the 2025 auction is the Right to Match (RTM) card. This year, the final bidder will be given an additional opportunity to raise their bid beyond the final amount if the player’s original franchise opts to use the RTM. This change could result in more strategic bidding wars. Players also have the option to negotiate new contracts instead of being tied to existing agreements.
Despite the changes, some franchises are taking a more conservative approach. Mumbai Indians, for example, are set to retain their core players—Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya—by reaching mutually beneficial agreements that accommodate the new financial impact.
