IPL 2025: Sanju Samson To Miss RR vs LSG Clash; Vaibhav Suryavanshi Likely To Debut

Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson

RR’s backbone and skipper, Sanju Samson, is set to miss a crucial match against Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur. This news dropped like a thunderclap on Friday, throwing RR’s plans into chaos. With the season already hanging by a thread, losing a star performer like Samson could be the blow that breaks the Royals’ playoff dreams.

Sanju Samson’s Injury Update

During RR’s nail-biting clash against Delhi Capitals on April 16, Samson pulled up after a blistering 31 off 19 balls. It wasn’t his fingers this time (which already kept him partially out earlier) — this time, it was abdominal pain. He had to retire hurt mid-innings, and RR eventually lost that game in a Super Over.

Head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed the injury, saying, “Sanju experienced a bit of pain in the abdominal area,” head coach Rahul Dravid said on Friday. “So we have gone for scans. He has done some scans today, so we are waiting for the results of those scans.”

The results of Samson’s scans are still pending, and the severity of the strain remains unclear. Dravid added, “And then once we get a bit more clarity around the scans and the severity of the injury, we’ll take a decision going forward, and we’ll see what happens.” One thing’s for sure: RR will tread carefully. With no fixed timeline for recovery, they may choose to rest him longer than risk aggravation.

Impact on Rajasthan Royals’ Batting Line-up

Samson has racked up 224 runs from 7 innings this season at an average of 37.33. He’s RR’s second-highest run-scorer, only behind Yashasvi Jaiswal. Beyond the stats, though, it’s Samson’s ability to shift gears and play the anchor or aggressor that RR desperately needs. Without him, the middle-order looks shaky and short on experience.

Riyan Parag – The Stand-In Captain

Enter Riyan Parag. At just 22, he’s already led RR earlier this season when Samson played as an Impact Player. Parag, often criticized for inconsistency, seems to have matured in 2025. His energy on the field and willingness to take responsibility has impressed many. This is a golden chance for Parag to stamp his leadership credentials — but he’ll need his bat to do just as much talking.

Spotlight on Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Vaibhav Suryavanshi is being considered as a potential replacement in the playing XI. If selected, he would be the youngest player ever to debut in the IPL. He was already repping India’s U-19 team before turning 14 and has a 58-ball ton against Australia U-19 to his name. He was picked up by RR in the 2025 auction for ₹1.1 crore. Not just a PR stunt — he has a triple century in domestic U-19 cricket and scored 176 runs in the 2024 U-19 Asia Cup.

Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2025 Campaign So Far

It’s been a rollercoaster, sitting at 8th on the points table, they’ve only avoided last place thanks to a slightly better Net Run Rate. Apart from Jaiswal and Samson, no other batter has crossed 200 runs. The bowling has been inconsistent too. After LSG, RR faces Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 24. It’s do-or-die time. If RR can squeeze a win without Samson, it’ll be massive for confidence. But another loss could just end their playoff hopes.
