The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to commence on March 22, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) playing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Eden Gardens. While Rajat Patidar has been confirmed as RCB’s captain, KKR is yet to announce their skipper.
The much-anticipated Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings encounter, often called the “El Clasico” of IPL, will take place on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with the return match scheduled for April 20 at the Wankhede Stadium. Notably, RCB and Mumbai Indians will meet just once this season, on April 7, 2025.
Venues and Match Distribution
This season, IPL will be played across 13 venues, including the ten traditional home grounds, along with Guwahati (Rajasthan Royals’ second venue), Dharamsala (Punjab Kings’ second venue), and Vizag (Delhi Capitals’ alternate venue). The league stage will conclude on May 18, followed by the playoffs, scheduled from May 20 to May 25.
The final will be hosted at Eden Gardens on May 25, while Qualifier 2 will also take place there on May 23. The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad will host both the Eliminator and Qualifier 1 on May 20 and 21, respectively. Punjab Kings will play three of their home games in Dharamsala, with the remaining matches at Mullanpur, Punjab.
Leadership Announcements and Key Fixtures
As teams gear up for the upcoming season, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are yet to reveal their captains. Rajat Patidar has been named RCB’s leader, while Punjab Kings have chosen Shreyas Iyer to take charge. Additionally, Rishabh Pant will be at the helm for Lucknow Super Giants, following KL Rahul’s exit from the franchise.
With 74 matches scheduled over 65 days, fans can expect an action-packed season. The first double-header of IPL 2025 will be on March 23, featuring SunRisers Hyderabad against Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
