Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been slapped with a hefty fine of Rs 24 lakh by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over rate during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians. Despite Punjab’s thrilling five-wicket win that propelled them into the final, Iyer’s team breached the IPL Code of Conduct, resulting in penalties.
All other players in Punjab’s playing XI, including the impact substitute, were fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever amount was lower. Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, also faced the same sanction. Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh, while his teammates were each fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their respective match fees.
Punjab Kings Storm into IPL 2025 Final
Shreyas Iyer led from the front with an explosive unbeaten 87 off 41 balls, guiding Punjab Kings to a memorable victory against five-time champions Mumbai Indians. This win secured Punjab a spot in the IPL final for the first time since 2014. They are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru on June 3 in what promises to be a thrilling finale.
Chasing a stiff target of 204, Josh Inglis set the tone early by smashing 20 runs in a single over off Jasprit Bumrah. A pivotal 84-run partnership between Iyer and Nehal Wadhera (48 off 29) over 7.5 overs took the game away from Mumbai. Iyer sealed the match with an over to spare, smashing eight towering sixes in the process.
Mumbai’s Strong Start Falls Short
Mumbai Indians, after being put in to bat, posted a competitive total of 203 for 6. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were key contributors with identical scores of 44, while opener Jonny Bairstow added 38 off 24 balls following Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal.
Tilak and Suryakumar stitched together a vital 72-run partnership for the third wicket. Naman Dhir’s late cameo of 37 off 18 balls boosted the total in the death overs. In the bowling department, Punjab’s Azmatullah Omarzai delivered the best figures with 2 for 43, while Yuzvendra Chahal, Vyshak Vijaykumar, and Kyle Jamieson chipped in with one wicket each to help restrict the Mumbai batting lineup.
