Punjab Kings secured a spot in the IPL 2025 final after a thrilling win over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, held in Ahmedabad. Although rain delayed the match by two hours, a full 20-over game was played. Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted an imposing 203/6.
In reply, PBKS chased down the target with an over to spare, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten knock of 87 off 41 balls by captain Shreyas Iyer. His innings, highlighted by eight sixes and five fours, proved crucial in a tense match that saw early setbacks for Punjab. Josh Inglis kickstarted the chase with a fiery 38 from 21 balls, including 20 runs off a single Bumrah over. Iyer then found a solid partner in Nehal Wadhera, who added 48 off 29 balls, building a game-changing 84-run stand for the fourth wicket.
Run Out Sparks Heated Exchange Between Teammates
A dramatic moment unfolded during the chase when Shashank Singh was run out for just 2 runs following a direct hit from Hardik Pandya. With 35 runs still needed from 20 balls, the run-out added immense pressure on the batting side. However, it wasn’t the sharp fielding that drew attention, but rather Shashank’s lack of urgency in completing the run.

Shreyas Iyer, visibly furious, did not hold back his emotions. After the match, which ended in PBKS’s favour, Iyer was caught on video confronting Shashank during the handshake sequence. He lashed out at his teammate with an expletive-filled outburst, expressing how the careless mistake could have cost the team a place in the final. Shashank, filled with remorse, remained silent and walked away without retaliating.
PBKS Eye Maiden Title After Reaching Final
Despite the heated moment, the mood in the PBKS camp turned jubilant following the win. This marks Punjab Kings’ first IPL final appearance since 2014 and sets up a title clash with Royal Challengers Bangalore.
With neither team having won the trophy before, the final promises a new champion for the first time since 2016. Iyer’s leadership, both with the bat and in holding players accountable, was instrumental in guiding PBKS to this crucial stage. As the team gears up for the summit clash, the focus will be on maintaining composure and converting this golden opportunity into their maiden IPL title.
