The latest rumor has sparked even more excitement ahead of IPL 2025. It suggests that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) might bid for one of Indian cricket’s biggest stars, Rohit Sharma. This speculation has created a buzz among cricket fans, who are eagerly imagining the possibility of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing together for the first time in IPL history.

AB de Villiers’ statement

Former RCB player and cricketing legend AB de Villiers has added fuel to the fire with his comments on the potential transfer. In his latest YouTube video, AB de Villiers expressed his thoughts on Rohit’s possible move to RCB, calling it “the biggest move ever” if it were to happen.

“If Rohit Sharma goes to RCB, it will be the biggest move in IPL history. It will make more headlines than any IPL transfer we’ve ever seen,” de Villiers stated.

However, AB de Villiers also admitted that this may be more fantasy than reality. He pointed out that Mumbai Indians, who have been Rohit’s team since 2011, would be unlikely to let go of their star player so easily.

“I can’t see Mumbai Indians letting go of Rohit Sharma,” added de Villiers, dampening some of the excitement among RCB fans.

Rohit Sharma as a potential RCB captain?

RCB’s leadership has been a topic of debate ever since Kohli stepped down. While they’ve had a few captains after him, none have truly made a lasting impact. With the 2025 season approaching, RCB is reportedly looking for a long-term captain who can bring stability and success to the team.

The rumors of Rohit Sharma joining RCB have also sparked discussions about leadership within the team. Virat Kohli, who stepped down as RCB captain after the 2021 season, has continued to be a core player for the franchise. Still, the team has struggled to find consistent success in terms of titles. If RCB does secure Rohit in the auction, he could be the game-changer that RCB has been waiting for all these years.

BCCI’s new retention rule

One of the reasons these rumors are swirling is due to a recent rule change by the BCCI regarding player retention. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the BCCI has allowed each franchise to retain up to six players, with one slot specifically reserved for an uncapped player.

This retention policy raises questions about which players will stay and which will go. While it is widely expected that Mumbai Indians will retain Rohit Sharma, rumors of his departure started circulating when Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain ahead of the 2024 IPL season.
