A commanding all-round performance from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a definitive 23-run victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 61 of IPL 2026 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday, May 17.
With this triumph, Bengaluru became the first team of the season to officially qualify for the playoffs, moving to 18 points, while Punjab suffered their sixth consecutive defeat. Explosive Batting Propels Bengaluru to 222
After being invited to bat first by Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer, Bengaluru lost opener Jacob Bethell (11) early to Harpreet Brar. However, the innings was steadied by a dynamic second-wicket partnership between Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal.
Kohli looked in pristine touch, striking a picturesque 58 off 37 balls, including a spectacular opening-over six off Azmatullah Omarzai, marking his record-extending ninth 500-plus run season in IPL history. Padikkal complemented him perfectly with a rapid 45 off 25 deliveries.
Following their dismissals, Venkatesh Iyer took complete control of the middle and death overs. Venkatesh smashed a magnificent, unbeaten 73 off 40 balls, featuring eight boundaries and four maximums.
Supported by a brisk cameo from Tim David (28 off 12 balls), Venkatesh’s maiden half-century in RCB colors propelled the visitors to an imposing total of 222/4. For Punjab, Harpreet Brar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/35.

Disciplined Bowling Restricts Punjab’s Resurgence
Chasing a daunting target of 223, Punjab’s pursuit crumbled early in the powerplay. Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck in the very first over, dismissing Priyansh Arya for a duck.
The hosts slipped further to 38/3 as dangerous top-order batsmen Prabhsimran Singh (2) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (1) fell cheaply against the disciplined new-ball operational spell of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar.
Middle-order batsman Shashank Singh staged a valiant lone fightback for Punjab, blasting a fierce 56 off 27 deliveries, inclusive of four boundaries and four sixes. He found brief support from Marcus Stoinis (37) and Cooper Connolly (37), keeping the required rate within mathematical reach.
However, RCB’s domestic pacer Rasikh Salam Dar broke the critical momentum by claiming clinical figures of 3/36. Punjab eventually finished their quota at 199/8, falling 23 runs short.
