As per reports in Inside Sport, the various Indian Premier League franchises are willing to get a fifth foreign player in IPL 2021 in their playing XI. The IPL has gone through a lot of changes since its inception and this is yet another change that the BCCI might think about.

However, the change has its own consequences with the Indian players in the playing XI lessening to six, if 5 foreign players are included. As per the current rules, a team is allowed to have a maximum of four overseas players and seven Indian players.

The captain can play eight Indians and 3 foreigners if he wants but the number cannot go beyond 4. Meanwhile, a senior BCCI official was in touch with InsideSport recently and spoke on the possibility of a fifth overseas player.

“Some of the franchises have been requesting from the last couple of editions to increase the number of foreigners in the playing11. BCCI is yet to have a serious discussion on the same. Once again request in this regard has been made by some franchises, we will take this up at appropriate forum”, a BCCI official told InsideSport.

Meanwhile, the IPL has seen a number of changes over the years It started with 8 teams in 2008 which was increased to 10 while for 2012 and 2013, it came down to 9. Uncapped players were also thrown into the auction since 2014. If this change is accepted by the BCCI, it will be another monumental change in the laws of the game.

However, while unearthing young Indian talent is the aim of the IPL, it looks quite unlikely that the board will accept the change. Meanwhile, the BCCI said that there will be a full-auction ahead of the 2021 season of the cash-rich league.

Teams like KKR, KXIP, DC, CSK and SRH are on the lookout for players to plug their loopholes. Mumbai Indians became champions for the fifth time in the IPL after beating Delhi Capitals in the final earlier this month.
