IPL Mega Auction Day 1: 84 Cricketers Up For Bidding

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Mega Auction is finally here, promising two days of intense bidding wars and game-changing decisions. Franchises, cricket enthusiasts, and players alike are brimming with excitement as teams prepare to shape their squads for the upcoming season. This auction will not just determine team rosters but could also redefine the dynamics of the league itself.

Key Guidelines for the Auction

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued detailed guidelines to streamline the auction process. Over two days, 577 players will compete for 204 available slots, including 70 for overseas players. A total of INR 641.5 crore is up for grabs, and the introduction of new rules like the Right to Match (RTM) clause has added an extra layer of intrigue.

Understanding the RTM Clause

The RTM option allows teams to retain a player they previously released by matching the highest bid. However, the new rule permits franchises to raise RTM bids by any amount, not necessarily in rounded figures. This flexibility has sparked debates among franchises regarding its potential impact on the auction’s flow and strategies.

The Marquee Players

The auction kicks off with 12 marquee players divided into two groups.

Group 1:

Group 2:

These players are expected to command significant bids, setting the tone for the auction. With INR 641.5 crore in the collective purse, teams must strategize carefully. Big bids on marquee players could limit funds for uncapped and emerging players, making budget management crucial.

IPL Auction Schedule for Day 1

The auction begins at 3:30 PM IST with the marquee players. Post-lunch, capped batters, all-rounders, and wicketkeepers will be up for grabs. The day concludes with the first set of uncapped players, including promising talents aiming to make their mark.

IPL Auction Schedule for Day 2

Day 2 covers players 85 to 116 in the register before transitioning to the accelerated bidding process. Teams must submit a shortlist of 25 players for this phase, ensuring the pace quickens as slots fill up.

Bidding Increments

The BCCI has outlined the following increments:

This structured approach ensures a fair and transparent bidding process. With 70 slots reserved for international players, stars like Mitchell Starc and Liam Livingstone will be in high demand. Their experience and skill sets add a global flair to the IPL. The marquee players will draw significant attention, but veterans like Faf du Plessis and rising stars like Prithvi Shaw add further excitement. These individuals can tilt the balance of any team they join.
