Rohit Sharma’s retirement has been the center of speculation for a while, with most assuming that the upcoming Australia series would mark his retirement from the sport. However, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has disputed these statements.

Following India’s 2024 World Cup victory, both Rohit Sharma and the Indian side have retired from T20I matches. They also withdrew from play before the England series, in which test matches were held. With only ODIs remaining as a form of international play, worries about their future have grown as India gets ready for an important ODI series against Australia set for October 2025.

The recent statements by Irfan Pathan seem to have shed light on Rohit Sharma’s plans. Pathan informed us that Rohit Sharma is aiming for the 2027 World Cup, which means he is not retiring anytime soon.

The ODI series for Australia is an important one for India, and also for the viewers, as attention will be placed on whether or not Rohit Sharma will be a part of it. As the 2027 World Cup gets closer, India looks to Rohit Sharma to do his part in leading the tournament to success.

‘He wants to make sure that he continues playing’: Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan shared a lengthy conversation with Rohit Sharma, which helped clarify some of the premature speculations around his career. Rohit outlined his intentions of focusing on playing further for India in international cricket with the aim of prolonging his career and offering as much help as possible. In spite of the hurdles and ample speculation, his will to keep playing is very much evident and is looking forward to tournaments such as the 2027 World Cup and later.

“This new (fitness) test is obviously not easy, so once you’re able to clear it, that means your fitness is top-notch. I had a long call with him as well as far as just to know about his future plans, he’s very keen. He wants to make sure that he continues playing,” Pathan said on Sony Sports.

“As long as the player is fit, the age doesn’t matter. But the challenge will be for him to have a game-time. Playing for India, I don’t think there will be any issues with the motivation. Be it’s Rohit. Be it’s Virat or be it’s Mohammed Shami as well. How much game-time they will have and how much they can continue playing cricket in whatever form, because they have retired from Test cricket (and) T20 Internationals as well,” Pathan added.

In a career filled with challenges, Rohit Sharma has always come out stronger. Earlier this year, he spearheaded India’s campaign during the Champions Trophy and his 76 in the final against New Zealand was yet another testament to his knack for stepping up when it counts the most.
