Mumbai batter Prithvi Shaw etched his name in the history books with the second-highest Ranji Trophy individual score of all time. He slammed 379 runs against Assam at the Amingaon Cricket Ground on Wednesday, January 11. Mumbai won the match comfortably by innings and 128 runs, securing a bonus point, with Prithvi Shaw named as the Player of the Match.
The opener’s blistering knock came on the back of forty-nine boundaries and four sixes. He expressed that getting a triple-century was a special feeling for him. Shaw added that he needs to keep his head down and follow his process, instead of getting complacent. In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 23-year-old opened up on his brilliant knock. He said,
“It was a special feeling for me, obviously, I was my first 300. Feels really nice the way white ball cricket is going and the red ball cricket as well. I think I just have to carry forward from his, not get really easy just because I have scored these runs. Have to keep my head down and follow my process, what I am doing all these days. I am trying to play according to the format and the conditions.”

I was keeping small targets in mind: Prithvi Shaw on his thought process during the knock
Assam skipper Gokul Sharma’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss surprised many. Mumbai capitalized on the opportunity of batting first, by putting on a mammoth 687 runs on the board in the first innings. Prithvi Shaw took on the Assam bowlers, slamming a double century on day 1. Meanwhile the Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane was also unbeaten in 70 at the end of the day’s play.
Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane piled on Assam’s misery on day two, as the two continued their partnership. They put together 401 runs for the third-wicket stand. Speaking about his thought process at the end of the first day’s play, Prithvi Shaw said,
“When I went out to bat I was totally blank. To be honest I just went out to bat and tried to play my natural game. The only thing that was there that I should not think about big score while batting, a 100 or 200. I was keeping small targets in mind, and after the end of the day I was batting on 240. When I came back, I just had my dinner and slept early, just to be fresh for the next morning. I told myself that I am not playing at 240, I will start again with zero.
“Ajju Da (Ajinkya Rahane) was playing with me and he said let’s both of us start with zero. We just kept on playing, the outfield was very fast. The wicket was good against fast bowlers, the ball was coming onto the bat,” Shaw added.
Mumbai bowled Assam out twice to secure an innings victory. They are second on the points table with three wins from five games and a loss. The Ajinkya Rahane-led team will play against Delhi next on Tuesday, January 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi.
