Australia opener Nathan McSweeney has shared his thoughts on returning to the red-ball team for the Sri Lanka tour after being dropped midway through the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). McSweeney had secured the opening spot alongside Usman Khawaja for the home summer following Steve Smith’s return to the middle order.
However, after just three matches, he was replaced by Sam Konstas due to underwhelming performances. With just 72 runs in three games and difficulties against Bumrah, McSweeney was dropped. Despite criticism, selectors confirmed he was still in their plans.
Even with Khawaja, Konstas, and Head options, McSweeney earned a spot in the squad for the two-match series in Sri Lanka. During his break from the national team, McSweeney played for Brisbane Heat in the 2024-25 BBL, scoring an unbeaten 78 against the Adelaide Strikers.
After being dropped from the Test squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he received some positive news from chief selector George Bailey.
“Obviously, [it was] nice news after a bit of a chaotic couple of months. It was a bit of nicer call than the last one. I will take heaps of learning from my experiences in my first three Tests and hopefully learn from that if I get the opportunity to play over there I play really well,” McSweeney told reporters (via ESPNcricinfo).
“It’s a great challenge no doubt, but one I have planned for and will be ready for no doubt. Playing spin in Australia has to be very different to playing spin over in Sri Lanka. I’ve worked out a method in Australia that has worked for me in my Shield career but will definitely have to work out a new one to be a good player over there,” McSweeney added.
“I believe it reflects the character we’ve observed”- George Bailey on Nathan McSweeney
Nathan McSweeney scored 72 runs in three Tests against India during the BGT 2024-25, with two single-digit scores at The Gabba, before being dropped. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed him four times in those matches.
Bailey commended McSweeney for his demeanor and professionalism following his exclusion from the squad.
“I think it shows the character that we’ve seen and the sort of person he is, the way he responded and spoke so well about it publicly pretty soon after it happened and jumped straight back into performing for the Heat,” Bailey said (via ESPNcricinfo).
