“It Won’t Be His Last Match”- BCCI Responds To Rohit Sharma Retirement Speculation

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has dismissed speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s future, stating that Sunday’s third ODI against England at Lord’s will not be the veteran opener’s final international appearance.

Retirement speculation gathered pace during the second ODI on Thursday after reports claimed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had informed the 39-year-old that he was no longer part of India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The reports also suggested that the selectors were looking at younger opening options to partner Shubman Gill in the lead-up to the tournament. The reports sparked speculation that Rohit Sharmacould retire from ODI cricket, similar to his decision to step away from Test cricket in 2025.

However, it was also reported that the veteran opener had no intention of retiring and had approached BCCI officials to discuss the team management’s reported decision.

“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future,” Saikia told PTI.

“I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match.”

Rohit Sharma has endured a difficult run in 2026, managing just one half-century in eight ODIs, with injuries disrupting his rhythm throughout the year. However, in the preceding three seasons, he remained one of India’s most consistent performers in the format.

In addition to captaining India to the 2025 Champions Trophy and 2024 T20 World Cup titles, Rohit also worked hard on his fitness in a bid to strengthen his case for a place in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad.

BCCI Clarification Hints Rohit Sharma’s Future Is Still Open

It is worth noting that while the selectors and head coach play key roles in team decisions, the BCCIoften has the final say on major matters such as a senior player’s future. Even if the selection committee wishes to move on from Rohit Sharma, the proposal would likely require the board’s approval.

Saikia’s remarks indicate that no final decision has been made yet, contrary to recent reports. If Rohit does not announce his retirement after the Lord’s ODI and continues to receive the BCCI’s backing, his ODI career for India could still continue.
