The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has undergone numerous changes in the past year, as Jaka Ashraf has become the third person to hold the position of PCB Chairman within the last year. Currently, Ashraf has extended a significant offer to a prominent individual.
The PCB has experienced considerable turbulence in the recent past. Since Rameez Raja’s departure following the T20 World Cup in October-November 2022, no permanent Chairman has been appointed.
As a result, a PCB Management Committee was established, with Najam Sethi serving as its chairman.
However, Sethi has now also resigned from his position, and Jaka Ashraf, known for his close association with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has assumed leadership of the committee for the next four months. Changes in other positions often accompany power transitions within the PCB.
Consequently, it is anticipated that Sethi’s departure and Ashraf’s arrival will spark discussions about the Chief Selector role. Ashraf took to Twitter on Friday to announce that he has offered the position of Chief Selector to former cricketer Mohammad Hafeez. However, he is currently awaiting Hafeez’s response.
Haroon Rashid presently occupies the Chief Selector position. The upcoming period holds major tournaments for the team, including the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.
If Hafeez accepts the offer, it could bring a fresh perspective to Pakistan’s team selection. It is worth noting that prior to Sethi assuming the chairman role, Shahid Afridi also served as the interim selector.
Mohammad Hafeez’s international career has spanned a significant period. He made his debut for Pakistan in 2003 and retired from all formats of cricket in 2021.
Over the course of 18 years, Hafeez played 55 Tests, 218 ODIs, and 119 T20 Internationals for Pakistan. He is regarded as one of Pakistan’s premier all-rounders. In Tests, Hafeez has scored 3,652 runs and taken 53 wickets.
In ODIs, he has accumulated 6,614 runs and claimed 139 wickets. Additionally, in T20 Internationals, Hafeez has scored 2,514 runs and taken 61 wickets. It remains to be seen whether he will accept Jaka Ashraf’s offer.
The current members of the PCB’s Management Committee include Jaka Ashraf (Chairman), Kaleem Ullah Khan, Asif Akhtar, Musaddiq Islam, Ajmat Parvez, Zahid Abbas, Khurram Karim Somaru, Khwaja Nadeem, Mustafa Ramday, and Zulfiqar Malik.
