James Anderson Honoured with Knighthood by Former PM Rishi Sunak

Legendary English fast bowler James Anderson has been awarded a knighthood, marking a significant recognition of his contributions to cricket. The honour was conferred upon him through former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list for his services to the sport.

Anderson, who officially retired from international cricket in 2024, remains England’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, with a staggering 704 wickets to his name. This knighthood not only celebrates his personal milestones but also reflects his impact on English cricket over the past two decades.

A Legendary Career Spanning Two Decades

Anderson’s cricket journey is a testament to endurance and excellence. He made his England debut in an ODI against Australia in December 2002 and later played his first Test in May 2003. Over a career that lasted more than 20 years, he represented England in 188 Tests, 194 ODIs, and 19 T20Is. While he gradually stepped away from limited-overs cricket after 2015, his presence in the Test arena remained strong well into his late 30s and early 40s.

Despite losing a bit of pace with age, his mastery in swinging the ball both ways kept him among the most feared bowlers, especially in English conditions. His skill, combined with unwavering fitness and determination, made him a mainstay of England’s bowling attack for years.

A Rare Honour in English Cricket

Receiving a knighthood is one of the highest civilian accolades in the UK, and Anderson now joins an exclusive group of English cricketers to have received this distinction. He becomes only the fifteenth English cricketer to be knighted, following in the footsteps of former England captain Andrew Strauss, who was honoured in 2019.

The recognition highlights not just Anderson’s statistical achievements, but also his influence, leadership, and the inspiration he has provided to generations of fast bowlers. As one of the greatest seamers in cricket history, James Anderson’s knighthood cements his legacy as a true icon of the sport.
