James Hopes Likely To Join Punjab Kings As Fast-Bowling Coach

Punjab Kings, under the new leadership of head coach Ricky Ponting, are expected to make several strategic staff additions for the upcoming IPL season. According to reports, former Australian cricketer James Hopes is likely to be appointed as the fast-bowling coach.

Ponting, who recently resigned from Delhi Capitals after seven years, was named the head coach of Punjab Kings on September 18, 2024. Hopes had worked with Ponting at Delhi Capitals, and his expertise is now expected to be leveraged by the Punjab-based franchise.

Key Retentions in Coaching Staff

In addition to the potential hiring of James Hopes, the Punjab Kings have reportedly retained several key members from their previous coaching setup. Brad Haddin, who has served as the fielding coach, and Sunil Joshi, the spin-bowling coach, are both expected to continue with the team.

These coaches were part of the staff during Trevor Bayliss’ tenure as head coach, and their retention under Ponting’s regime reflects continuity in the support structure. The Kings’ management is also in the process of determining player retentions for the 2025 IPL season, with a focus on building a competitive squad.

Ponting’s Mission to Turnaround Punjab Kings’ Fortunes

Ricky Ponting, who has signed a four-year contract, is tasked with changing the trajectory of Punjab Kings, a team that has struggled to make a significant impact in recent years. Their only appearance in an IPL final came in 2014, and they have failed to secure a top-five finish in the last seven seasons.

The franchise ended the 2024 IPL season in ninth place out of ten teams. Ponting’s primary goal will be to guide the Kings to a top-four finish in the upcoming season, with hopes that the revamped coaching staff, including the potential addition of James Hopes, will play a crucial role in achieving that objective.
