Indian women’s cricket star Jemimah Rodrigues is poised to take over as captain of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 Women’s Premier League season. Reports suggest the franchise is expected to make the official announcement shortly, marking a significant leadership transition. Delhi Capitals had been led by Meg Lanning for the first three editions of the tournament, but the former Australian skipper was released before the mega auction. Team co-owner Parth Jindal had earlier indicated a clear preference for an Indian captain, reinforcing the franchise’s long-term vision of building leadership from within the domestic core.
Alongside Rodrigues, the Delhi Capitals retained several key players who form a strong nucleus for the upcoming season. These include explosive opener Shafali Verma, all-rounders Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp, and promising youngster Niki Prasad, who captained India to the U-19 World Cup title. With this blend of experience and youth, the franchise appears well-positioned for a new era under Indian leadership.
Match-Winning Knock Against Sri Lanka In T20I Opener
While speculation around her captaincy gathered pace, Rodrigues continued her fine form on the field during India’s opening match of the five-game women’s T20I series against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam. After India’s bowlers produced a disciplined display to restrict the visitors to 121 for six, Rodrigues anchored the chase with an unbeaten 69 off 44 deliveries. Her innings ensured India reached the target comfortably, finishing at 122 for two with more than five overs to spare.
Rodrigues’ performance followed her impressive run in the Women’s ODI World Cup, where she played a vital role in India’s journey to the final. In Visakhapatnam, she once again demonstrated composure under pressure, guiding the chase with maturity and confidence.
Partnerships, Milestones, And Clinical Finish
Rodrigues reached her half-century in just 34 balls, striking 10 boundaries in a well-paced knock. She shared a crucial second-wicket stand of 54 runs with Smriti Mandhana, who contributed a steady 25 after Shafali Verma’s early dismissal. Mandhana’s innings also saw her become the first Indian batter to cross 4,000 runs in women’s T20I cricket, underlining her consistency at the top.
After Mandhana’s departure, Rodrigues found strong support from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, with the pair adding an unbeaten 55-run partnership to seal the win. Harmanpreet remained not out on 15 as India secured a comprehensive victory and took a 1–0 lead in the series. Rodrigues’ calm build-up, sharp running between the wickets, and timely acceleration once again highlighted why she is increasingly viewed as a natural leader for both franchise and country.
