Ahead of the much-anticipated Test series between India and England in 2025, England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s captaincy. Speaking on the For The Love Of Cricket podcast hosted by Stuart Broad, Buttler said that Gill displays a unique blend of traits found in two of India’s most iconic leaders — Virat and Rohit Sharma.
According to him, Gill strikes a balance between Kohli’s fiery, assertive leadership and Rohit’s composed, laid-back captaincy. Buttler appreciated Gill’s approach of mentally separating his role as a batter from that of a captain, which, he believes, reflects maturity beyond his years.
Gill’s Growth During IPL 2025 With Gujarat Titans
Buttler, who shared the Gujarat Titans (GT) dressing room with Shubman Gill during the IPL 2025 season, got a first-hand view of his leadership style. The franchise, however, could not go deep into the tournament, getting eliminated by the Mumbai Indians in the playoffs. Despite the loss, Buttler was impressed by Gill’s temperament and leadership approach.
At just 25, Gill is already being seen as one of the future pillars of Indian cricket. Buttler’s endorsement further strengthens the belief that the young opener is capable of leading India with vision and composure, especially as the team transitions into a new era with Kohli and Rohit possibly stepping back from longer formats.
Pant and Bumrah Also Key Figures for India
Apart from Gill, Buttler also praised Rishabh Pant, calling him a “box office cricketer” — someone he would turn the TV on just to watch. Buttler sees Pant as a rare talent in the Test arena, capable of changing the course of a game with his aggressive style. He also acknowledged Jasprit Bumrah as another big name to watch in the England series.
With the absence of seasoned campaigners like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India’s tour of England will feature a relatively new leadership core. Buttler believes the likes of Gill, Pant, and Bumrah will be key players in shaping the outcome of the series, both in terms of performance and leadership.
