Jos Buttler’s Delayed Return As England’s White-Ball Captain

Jos Buttler has been struggling with a calf injury for over four months, sidelining him from competitive cricket since England’s semi-final loss to India in the T20 World Cup in June. Despite multiple efforts at rehabilitation, the injury has persisted, preventing Buttler from participating in key tournaments like The Hundred and the T20I and ODI series against Australia.

Impact on England’s White-Ball Team

Buttler’s absence has left a noticeable void in the leadership structure of England’s white-ball team. As a captain and a player, Buttler has been instrumental in driving England’s success in limited-overs formats. Without him, the team has had to rely on alternate captains like Harry Brook and now, Liam Livingstone, who has been given the opportunity to lead the ODI squad.

“He’s an incredibly gifted player,” McCullum added at his unveiling. “He’s a fine leader. My job is to get the best out of him so that all those that sit in the dressing-room feel like they can be ten-feet tall and bulletproof when they walk out to play, and they know that the skipper is going to give them that extra pat on the back and and enjoy the ride with them.”

Buttler was a non-playing presence during the Australia series, with Marcus Trescothick, England’s interim white-ball coach who will be leading the Caribbean tour, insisting: “There’s no reason why Jos won’t fit back into that mould, score millions of runs, captain well and fit back into the team perfectly.”

“Let’s make it clear,” Trescothick said. “He will come straight back in. At what position, I don’t know. We’ll look at that for the Caribbean.”

The calf injury has caused Buttler to miss several crucial tournaments and series. After the T20 World Cup, he was expected to lead the Manchester Originals in The Hundred, but his injury forced him to withdraw from the competition. Additionally, Buttler was absent during England’s ODI and T20 series against Australia, further extending his time away from competitive cricket.
