To honor his memory and his strong connection to Victorian cricket, Cricket Victoria and St Kilda Cricket Club have renamed a heritage-listed grandstand at the Junction Oval in Melbourne as the Shane Warne Stand.
Why Rename the Stand After Shane Warne?
Shane Warne’s close association with St Kilda Cricket Club and Victorian cricket made him a natural choice for this honor. Warne’s early cricketing years were spent at the Junction Oval, and his debut in first-class cricket for Victoria in 1991 took place here. Renaming the stand after him is a way to commemorate not only his impact on global cricket but also his local roots and contribution to Victorian cricket.
The Official Unveiling Ceremony
The official unveiling of the Shane Warne Stand took place before a One-Day Cup match between Victoria and New South Wales at the Junction Oval. Warne’s family, including his father Keith Warne and his daughters Summer and Brooke, were present at the ceremony, alongside Australian cricket stars Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, and Glenn Maxwell. The event was a heartfelt tribute, with speeches reflecting on Warne’s contributions to the game and his deep connection to the Oval.
A Tribute to Both Warne and Murray
While the Shane Warne Stand is a fitting tribute, the legacy of Kevin Murray is also preserved. Murray’s new recognition at Brunswick Street Oval is a testament to his contributions to Australian football, and it highlights how sporting legends from different fields can be honoured in unique ways.
Keith Warne, Shane’s father, delivered an emotional speech during the unveiling, expressing pride in the tribute to his late son. He spoke of Shane’s fond memories of playing at the Junction Oval and his strong ties to St Kilda Cricket Club.
“Today marks a very special and proud day for the Warne family to have a stand named the Shane Warne stand here at the Junction Oval is a wonderful tribute to Shane, who we know would be honored to be chosen for such an accolade,” Keith Warne said at the unveiling.
“In February 1991 he made his first-class debut playing for Victoria against Western Australia here at the Junction Oval. Some of Shane’s most enjoyable early cricketing years were whilst playing with his beloved St Kilda, especially when the matches were played here at the Junction Oval. As proud as Shane would be to know a stand at the Junction Oval bares his name, he would also be thrilled to know that he will now be forever linked with St Kilda Cricket Club and the Junction Oval. On behalf of her family, I’d like to thank Cricket Victoria and St Kilda Cricket Club for their support in honouring Shane with such a wonderful tribute, further enhancing Shane’s incredible legacy.”
Many of Shane Warne’s former teammates and Australian cricket stars were present at the event, highlighting the deep respect Warne commanded within the cricketing community. Australia Test captain Pat Cummins and players like Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell not only attended the ceremony but also participated in the match that followed, showing their personal connection to Warne’s legacy.
