Kagiso Rabada’s Heroics Secure MI Cape Town’s First SA20 Title

MI Cape Town’s pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada delivered a phenomenal performance in the SA20 final, taking 4/25 to dismantle Sunrisers Eastern Cape for a mere 105 runs. His fiery spell ensured a dominant 76-run victory after MI Cape Town posted a strong 181/8—the second-highest total in SA20 final history.

Rabada also pulled off a stunning diving catch at point to dismiss Sunrisers’ captain Aiden Markram, shifting the momentum in MI Cape Town’s favour. With support from spinners George Linde and Rashid Khan, Rabada led the charge to secure his team’s maiden SA20 trophy.

MI Cape Town’s Explosive Batting Display

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, MI Cape Town started aggressively with Ryan Rickelton smashing 33 off 15 balls, pushing his team to 51 runs within five overs. Though he fell to a clever slower ball from Craig Overton, MI Cape Town still managed 52/2 by the end of the Powerplay—the Sunrisers’ highest Powerplay total conceded in the tournament.

Rickelton also etched his name in the record books, surpassing Heinrich Klaasen as the highest run-scorer in SA20 history with 1012 runs. Contributions from Dewald Brevis and Connor Esterhuizen (50-run stand off 30 balls) helped MI Cape Town reach a competitive total, which proved too much for Sunrisers to chase.

Sunrisers Struggle Under Pressure

Chasing 182, Sunrisers Eastern Cape found themselves in early trouble, losing David Bedingham and Jordan Hermann with just eight runs on the board. A fightback from Tom Abell and Tony de Zorzi, who stitched together a 57-run partnership, briefly revived hopes.

However, wickets fell in quick succession, with Linde and Rashid dismissing both batters, reducing Sunrisers to 68/4. Markram’s dismissal further derailed the chase, leaving Sunrisers’ dreams of a third consecutive SA20 title in tatters. Rabada returned to finish the job, sealing MI Cape Town’s triumph and ending Sunrisers’ reign as champions.
