Kanpur’s Green Park Under Fire After Match Washout

The second Test between India and Bangladesh at Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium was abruptly halted on day three despite clear skies and sunshine. A “wet outfield” was cited as the reason, even though no rain had fallen. Frustration mounted as both teams stayed at their hotel while officials inspected the field multiple times, finding the deep mid-wicket area and parts of the 30-yard circle still wet. Despite efforts from the ground staff, play was never resumed, leading to growing criticism.

Criticism of Ground Conditions

Shiv Kumar, the pitch curator of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), expressed confusion over the match officials’ reservations, claiming that the pitch and most parts of the ground were playable. However, match referee Jeff Crowe and the umpires repeatedly delayed the match, hoping for sunlight to dry the soggy areas.

Spectators, some of whom travelled long distances, voiced their disappointment with the Green Park facilities, blaming the UPCA for poor maintenance of one of India’s oldest Test venues. Fans lamented the loss of two full days of play despite favourable weather conditions.

Future of International Games at Green Park in Doubt

This washout has renewed concerns about Green Park’s ability to host international matches. Many recalled a similar issue during the Afghanistan-New Zealand Test in Greater Noida, where poor outfield conditions led to a match being abandoned.

BCCI sources have hinted that Kanpur’s Green Park might lose future matches to Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, a modern facility with better infrastructure. Lucknow has already hosted several high-profile games, and with its superior drainage system, it could become the preferred venue for international cricket in Uttar Pradesh.

Given the repeated issues with Green Park’s drainage and ground conditions, its future as an international cricket venue seems uncertain. With fans and officials alike expressing dissatisfaction, the UPCA will need to make significant improvements if it hopes to retain prestigious matches.

As the spotlight shifts to better-equipped venues like Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, which boasts superior infrastructure and a track record of successful hosting, Kanpur may lose its place on the international cricket map unless swift action is taken to address these concerns.
