“Ravi Shastri who had no talent and played so big cricket”: Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev will go down in history as one of the greatest of all time. According to many fans and experts, he is the best all-rounder in the history of Indian cricket. Kapil Dev is mainly known for leading India towards the victory in the 1983 World Cup finals against the giants West Indies. The former captain is also known for giving his strong opinions on the players during cricket discussions.

Kapil talked about Ravi Shastri in a promotional event in 2017. The 1983 world cup winning captain gave a special mention to the Indian Head Coach. During the time of interaction, Kapil Dev asserted that Ravi Shastri did not have talent but he used to have the determination to give amazing performances.

“Somebody like Ravi Shastri who had no talent and played so big cricket, I think that is the credit. There are two types of cricketers, somebody who has the ability (but) underplayed, somebody who doesn’t have the ability played much more,” Kapil said at the official launching of the book titled Numbers Do Lie. The book Numbers Do Lie is co-authored by former Team India opener Aakash Chopra.

“Ravi Shastri had so much determination. In the team we value that. We used to say ‘Ravi just play 30 overs, even get 10 runs doesn’t matter. You playing 30 overs is good enough because in the end we can hammer any fast bowler when the ball becomes soft,” Kapil added.

I admire you (Ravi Shastri) because I didn’t think you have talent: Kapil Dev

The current Head coach of Virat Kohli-led India; Ravi Shastri made his debut in the 1980s under the leadership of Kapil Dev. Shastri will always be remembered for guiding India towards victory in 1985 the World Championship of Cricket finals. The former all-rounder played a knock of unbeaten 63 in the Finals against Pakistan. Ravi Shastri was also awarded as Man of the Series award for his sensational performance throughout the tournament.

“I say this on Ravi Shastri’s face also (that) I admire you because I didn’t think you have talent. He was not one of the best athletes. Another was Anil Kumble. (He was) not an athlete. But when you see his performance, nobody has done better than him,” Kapil added.

Shastri represented India in 80 Tests in which he scored 3830 runs and picked 151 wickets. In the ODI format, Shastri scored 3108 runs and picked up 129 wickets. Shastri played his final Test and ODI matches against South Africa in 1992.
