Karun Nair Questions Selectors’ Decision: “I Deserved More Than a Series”

Indian cricketer Karun Nair has openly expressed his disappointment over being dropped from the national setup despite consistent domestic performances. The right-handed batter, who once made headlines with a triple century in Test cricket, believes he wasn’t given a fair chance to prove himself. “I know I deserved a lot better,” Nair said, pointing towards the limited opportunities that followed his recall to the Indian Test team.

His recent remarks come after chief selector Ajit Agarkar hinted that the selectors expected stronger performances during the England tour.

Frustration After England Tour Snub

After amassing over 1,500 runs in the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, Nair earned a place in the Indian squad for the Test series in England. However, his stint there was short-lived, with the batter managing 205 runs overall, a return Agarkar termed “below expectations.” Following the tour, Nair was left out of India A’s red-ball squad for the South Africa series — a move that further deepened his frustration. “It was quite disappointing,” he admitted, saying he had hoped for more backing from the selectors considering his domestic consistency.

Nair emphasized that a single series should not determine a player’s future in international cricket, especially when that player has shown perseverance and results at the domestic level. He subtly questioned the selection committee’s approach, saying that players deserve a “run of games” to truly establish themselves and adapt to the demands of international cricket.

Focusing on Redemption and Comeback

Despite the setback, Nair remains determined to let his performances speak for him. The Karnataka batter underlined that his main objective is to continue scoring runs and helping his team win matches. “My focus is simple — to win games for whichever team I play for,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to the sport. He added that representing India again remains his ultimate motivation.

While selectors may have moved on for now, Nair’s domestic numbers suggest a player far from finished. His words reflect both pain and hunger — emotions often seen in players who have briefly touched the highest level and yearn to return. As he continues to pile up runs, his message to the selection committee is clear: talent and determination deserve more than just a single opportunity to prove worth.
