Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra offered a glimpse into his coaching mindset as the team prepared for their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With a calm and composed approach, Nehra emphasizes simplicity and clarity, steering clear of overcomplication. He believes that success in the IPL’s fast-paced and extended format comes from creating a stable environment where players are not judged but allowed to settle and express themselves.
Nehra shared his view on JioHotstar’s ‘Aava De’, stating that players, especially new ones, need time and space to adapt to a new franchise. According to him, a large chunk of the team changes every three years, making it crucial to rebuild team chemistry regularly. In the absence of a bio-bubble, this process has become more challenging. However, he underlines the importance of doing the basics right, saying, “There’s no rocket science. It’s all about clarity and keeping things simple.”
The Journey So Far and Challenges Ahead
Since taking over as GT’s head coach, Nehra has played a vital role in the team’s progress, including their title win in 2022 and a finals appearance the following year. Although they narrowly missed a second title due to Ravindra Jadeja’s late heroics for CSK, Nehra’s impact on the team has been profound.
Entering his fourth season with the franchise, he is now tasked with integrating new players after every auction and re-establishing team dynamics swiftly. The IPL’s format leaves little time for bonding, so Nehra focuses on providing clarity both on and off the field. “How do you build chemistry in a week?” he reflected, highlighting the unique challenges coaches face. His focus remains on giving players confidence and direction without overburdening them with unnecessary pressure.
Backing Shubman Gill as GT’s Leader
With Hardik Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans turned to young opener Shubman Gill as their new captain. Although Gill’s first season in charge saw the team finish eighth, Nehra remains confident in his leadership potential. He believes Gill’s growth will stem from personal experience and a continued desire to learn.
“I’m not just looking at results – I’m looking at him as a person and captain,” Nehra stated. He’s convinced that if Gill stays humble and keeps evolving, he has the ability to take GT to new heights. With Nehra’s mentorship and Gill’s natural talent, Gujarat Titans are aiming for a resurgence in IPL 2025.
