Former Indian selector Kiran More has backed Rohit Sharma to take over as the ODI captain of the side from Virat Kohli. Virat he thinks can continue leading the side in the red-ball format. Rohit has led India previously in white-ball formats and was also the vice-captain for the Australia Tests in Kohli’s absence.
Kiran More talking to India TV spoke on split captaincy for the Indian team and thinks that it can work in their favour. The former chief selector said that Rohit will get a chance to lead the team soon and that an update regarding Kohli might be out after the England tour.
Kiran More In Favour Of Rohit Sharma As ODI Captain
“I think the vision of the board drives these things. I believe Rohit Sharma will get a chance soon. Virat Kohli is a shrewd captain who played under MS Dhoni. How long he wants to captain the ODIs and T20s, he will also think. You will learn a lot more about these decisions after the England tour,” More told India TV.
Kiran More further said that captaining an international side in all three formats is no mean task. He lauded Virat Kohli for his efforts but claimed that a ‘healthy’ renouncing of the captaincy would set a precedent for generations to follow. As for Rohit Sharma, he is confirmed to lead white-ball teams whenever Virat Kohli is on break.
Kiran More Backs Split Captaincy
“It [Split captaincy] can work in India. What the senior players think about the Indian team’s future is very important. With Virat Kohli, captaining three teams isn’t that easy plus he has to perform as well. And I give him the credit for it because performing in every format while captaining and winning… but, I think there will be a time when Virat Kohli will say ‘Now it’s enough, let Rohit lead the side.”
The debate regarding split captaincy has been a longstanding one in Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma has been previously backed by many to lead the Indian team in the white-ball formats given his stupendous records in both formats.
