KL Rahul, the renowned Indian batter, is gearing up for a fresh challenge in the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Having joined the Delhi Capitals (DC), Rahul is expected to take on a middle-order role rather than his usual opening spot. As per a report by Sahil Malhotra of Times of India, DC plans to open with Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk, shifting Rahul to a different position to bolster their batting depth.

Transitioning from Opener to Middle-Order Batter

Rahul has primarily played as an opener throughout his IPL career, featuring in 99 out of his 123 innings at the top of the order. While his overall record has been impressive, his strike rate has been a point of discussion. Critics have suggested that a move to the middle order in T20s could allow him to play with greater freedom, especially considering his ability to anchor innings.

His experience in batting lower down the order isn’t entirely new. In international cricket, Rahul has successfully adapted to a middle-order role in Tests and ODIs, showcasing his versatility. His standout performances in the Champions Trophy, where he excelled at No. 6, might have influenced DC’s decision to utilize him in a similar capacity.

Delhi Capitals Banking on Rahul’s Experience

Another factor influencing this shift is the absence of Harry Brook, leaving a crucial gap in DC’s middle order. With Rahul’s experience and ability to handle pressure, the franchise sees him as an ideal candidate to provide stability and firepower in the crucial middle overs.

DC acquired Rahul for ₹14 crore after his departure from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Initially, there was speculation that he might take on the captaincy role, but the team has decided to entrust Axar Patel with the leadership. As DC eyes their maiden IPL title, they will be hoping that Rahul’s presence adds the necessary balance and firepower to their squad.
